What Is PHP, and Who Benefits From It?

Drug and alcohol addiction are two of the biggest health concerns in America today, with millions of people being affected yearly. Getting sober is challenging at best and dangerous if anything goes wrong. Professional treatment is always the preferable option, and those who go through detox and treatment with the support of trained professionals are more likely to maintain their sobriety. There are varying levels of treatment in the continuum of care, and one of the most important is the partial hospitalization program or PHP. A comprehensive addiction therapy program will use a partial hospitalization program for patients transitioning back to normal life.

If you or someone you know is trying to get sober, professional help can make the experience more comfortable, rewarding, and fulfilling. At CeDAR, we understand that the support a person gets from their community in therapy is one of the biggest factors contributing to continued sobriety. We offer various levels of care that match where you are in your recovery journey. If you want to learn more about the programs and therapies we offer, please contact us today at 720.848.3000. We would be more than happy to get you started in a comprehensive addiction treatment program.

What Is PHP?

A partial hospitalization program or PHP is a form of addiction treatment program. A partial hospitalization program typically offers services and therapies comparable to inpatient treatment programs. However, a partial hospitalization program will not require the patient to stay in the treatment center full-time.

The PHP may be similar to an intensive outpatient program or IOP. However, the two will differ in how much time the patient spends in the program. A partial hospitalization program will have the patient spending around 5 to 6 hours each day on activities and participating in therapy. In contrast, an intensive outpatient program will generally have a patient spending 2 to 3 hours daily on therapy and other activities.

Some of the therapies and treatments offered in a partial hospitalization program may include:

  • Psychotherapy
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Process groups
  • Medication management
  • Psychiatric appointments

Of course, the included treatments will depend on each patient’s needs. If a patient relapses or shows little improvement in a partial hospitalization program, they may be referred to a residential program. Those who can transition back to day-to-day life effectively may move to a standard outpatient program.

Who Benefits From a Partial Hospitalization Program?

If a person can stay sober outside the treatment center but needs more treatment to address the root causes of a substance use disorder, they may enter a partial hospitalization program directly. Patients who need extensive care and management may be good candidates for a partial hospitalization program.

Those who have successfully undergone a residential treatment program may use a partial hospitalization program to ease themselves back into normal life. While the time commitment is still significant, the patient can also receive the support of their friends and loved ones and can live at home.
